They have been at the heart of Manchester life for decades, and by 2008 we had united as The Manchester College. Since then, we’ve continued to expand our offering and invest in our communities, opening new campuses and Centres of Excellence, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in learning and training. Today, we’re the number one provider of 16-19 education, adult education and higher education in FE in Greater Manchester.

Harpurhey College also has Harpurhey Baths which is a Grade II listed building and part of the campus which was transformed into an award-winning exhibition space for students and the community.

In 2021, a number of upgrades to our Harpurhey Campus including the installation of 156 x Solar PV Panel Installation to improve our sustainability and reduce Harpurhey Colleges carbon footprint.

Multi Award Winning ASH Integrated Services were successful in securing this project where we carried out the design, supply and installation of ‘156 x Solar PV Panels via The Manchester College Consultants who carried out the Tender Exercise.

ASH Integrated Services offers a joined up electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and renewable energy project and maintenance solution, which reduces stress for clients by offering one point of contact and dedicated mechanical and electrical supervisors on each contract/project as per the following link below.

We have also previously carried out successful installation of Solar PV Panels on behalf of Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council at both Stockport Exchange Car Park and the Pendlebury Centre and many other clients.

Projects and Project Management is a prime focus and area of competence within ASH Integrated Services where we have previously carried out similar Mechanical & Electrical Projects for our clients.

ASH Integrated Services have been procured by The Manchester College to undertake the following:

  • Removal of 220 x Old PV Solar Panels and associated equipment.
  • The supply and installation of 156 x New Solar PV Panels,
  • Rewiring the DC cabling and upgrades installation where necessary.

Scope of Works: We carried out the Design, Installation, Verification, Test, Commission and set to work the full PV array on the roof of the Harpurhey College Roof utilising previous installed fixings. The full array consisted of the supply and installation of 156 x JA Solar JAM72S20-460/MR Solar PV Panels fed via 2 x Solis 110K 5G-Pro and 1 x S5-GR3P20K Inverters which were installed on the roof and fed from the existing PV Control Panel located within the roof plantroom.

Testing, Commissioning & Instruction Attendance: We can confirm that commissioning of all systems, witnessing and inspection was carried out prior to handover. This also allowed for the demonstration of the system and equipment to theclient and their representative prior to contract completion. We can also confirm that alltesting and commissioning was carried out in accordancewith the latest 18th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations.

Handover: We can confirm that prior to handover allcertification was completed and provided for checking by the Clients Consultant before handover. Once the Clients Consultant approved these documents a full set of each was added into the O&M Manuals which included all technical information of equipment installed and drawings:

The project started on the 12th Feb 2023 and was completed on the 29th Feb 2023, with the which took approximately 3 Weeks to final completion. We can also confirm that the Project was delivered on budget with no requirement for any return visit.

We can confirm the benefit and impact to The Manchester College are as follows:

  • This installation allow them to further its ‘Sustainability Credentials’.
  • The Manchester College has just become a userof the most important energy source of the future – and yet the oldest one in existence.
  • For example correctly installed, it will provide many years of reliable service the Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems use PV cells to convert solar radiation into electricity. When light shines on the panel it creates an electric field across the layers of the cells, causing electricity to flow. The greater the intensity of the light, the greater the flow of electricity.
  • The result is a PV array which supplies DC power to an inverter. The inverter, in turn, provides an AC power supply to the building. If the building has mains electricity, after notifying the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) of the installation, it is possible to export any excess electricity to the national grid.

Dan Godwin – Chief Engineer, The Manchester College said the following:

We were pleased that ASH Integrated Services were able to utilise existing Solar Panel roof fixings and the existing PV Control Panel, this not only kept the cost competitive, but also the Project was completed within a 3 Weeks Period’.

We can’t speak highly enough about the ASH Team led by Lee Corbally – Electrical Manager, as they kept noise levels to a minimum, especially as the building was fully occupied by Students whilst the work was going ahead.

Lee Corbally – Electrical Manager, ASH Integrated Services said the following:

It is not always easy to deliver a replacement project within budget and trying to utilise existing fixing and equipment to keep costs down. I’m glad we did our homework prior to the start of the project as this allowed us to deliver the project in 3 weeks.

‘As per the Benjamin Franklin quote – If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail’.
