The UK is facing a major challenge: a shortage of skilled workers in mechanical and electrical engineering.

Demand continues to outstrip supply, and without action, project delivery times will slip, costs will rise, and vital public infrastructure could stall.

At ASH Integrated Services, we believe apprenticeships are a vital part of the solution.

They are proving to be the lifeblood of the engineering sector.

Developing Talent Early

Too often, the conversation about careers in engineering starts too late. By the time students are leaving school, many already carry stereotypes and misconceptions about trades.

The government has recognised this, encouraging businesses to start the conversation much earlier.

That’s why our Co-Director, Antony Grace, who also serves as Wigan Vice President for the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce — regularly visits both primary and secondary schools.

Over the last academic year, Antony has delivered careers talks in more than 10 schools, reaching over 600 students across Greater Manchester and providing 40+ hours of direct employer engagement.

In primary schools, he uses interactive challenges to show how maths, science, and problem-solving connect directly to engineering.

In secondary schools, the conversation shifts to practical topics such as apprenticeships, entry routes, and even pay, always a hot topic for students.

Schools have told us that after these sessions, pupils actively request careers advice about mechanical and electrical engineering.

This early intervention sparks curiosity, nurtures interest, and shows young people and their parents that engineering offers respected, rewarding career options.

Apprenticeships in Action

Our people are our greatest asset, and apprenticeships are central to our growth strategy. We currently employ 8 apprentices, with 2 more starting this year, and 3 preparing to complete their training and move into full-qualified roles.

Apprenticeships at ASH are a pathway to progression.

One apprentice who joined straight from school is now leading small site teams on commercial projects, proof that investing early produces confident, capable engineers within just a few years.

We also ensure training doesn’t stop when apprentices qualify. In the past 12 months, more than 30% of our team have completed further training, from renewable energy technologies to advanced safety certifications.

Benefits for Business and Apprentices

Apprenticeships are mutually beneficial.

For young people, they offer a chance to earn while learning, removing barriers that can come with higher education. They open doors to stable, well-paid careers with clear progression.

For businesses, apprenticeships create a loyal, skilled, and adaptable workforce.

Apprentices grow up with the culture of the company, learning not only technical skills but also the standards, values, and behaviours that set employers apart.

At ASH, this investment in people has translated into strong staff retention, 12 new roles created in the past year, and consistent praise from clients for the professionalism of our teams.

Bridging Education and Industry

Apprenticeships succeed when education and industry work hand in hand.

That’s why we’ve joined The Manchester College Employer Alliance Group Advisory Board for Engineering and Electrical.

This partnership allows us to help shape the curriculum, ensuring training reflects real industry needs. By doing so, we help bridge the gap between what students learn in the classroom and the skills employers require on site.

Safeguarding the Future

Apprenticeships alone won’t close the skills gap overnight, but they are a vital part of the solution. Every school visit, every apprentice who qualifies, and every training course completed moves the sector forward.

At ASH Integrated Services, we are proud to be leading from the front.

In just five years, we’ve grown from four employees to 65, won six national awards, and achieved accreditations including Constructionline Gold, Cyber Essentials, and registration with the Legionella Control Association.

These achievements send a strong message to current and future employees: ASH is a company that invests in its people and its future.

Our goal is clear, to continue delivering exceptional mechanical and electrical services while building an inclusive, highly skilled workforce that will sustain our sector for decades to come.
