At ASH Integrated Services, we believe it’s never too early to start having career conversations and inspiring young minds.

Our Director, Antony Grace, recently visited Millbrook Primary School to speak to students about what it’s like to be an electrician. His visit sparked much interest with the children.

Traditionally, careers advice begins in secondary school. But Antony, like many others in industry, believes we should be planting the seed of career ambition much earlier.

“The government has realised we need to be discussing career aspirations at a much earlier age than high school, so I go in and talk about being an electrician,” Antony explained. “I do enjoy it, the kids are pretty good as I get them involved from the start.”

By bringing real-world jobs into the classroom, younger children can start building curiosity and confidence about their future, before they’ve even thought about their GCSE options.

Early exposure to different industries gives children context for their learning and helps them see how subjects like maths and science can be applied in everyday life.

At a time when the UK is facing skills shortages in many sectors, especially in mechanical and electrical engineering, early engagement is a powerful tool. It helps to break down stereotypes about who can pursue technical careers and broaden horizons by showing children careers they may never have considered.

By letting them ask questions and get hands-on it builds their confidence.

Antony’s presentation is interactive and engaging, giving pupils a fun, age-appropriate insight into the life of an electrician. From demonstrating tools to talking about how electricity works, the session gave pupils a glimpse into a real profession. Many walked away saying they wanted to be an electrician when they grow up!

This kind of experience plants the seed for long-term interest in STEM subjects and technical career paths. This is vital for the future of our industries.

At ASH Integrated Services, we are passionate about supporting young people at every stage of their education journey. We are actively supporting initiatives that promote careers in mechanical and electrical engineering. This includes schools like Millbrook, as well as colleges and sixth forms.

Getting children involved in career conversations from a young age makes a lasting difference.
