Low-Carbon Buildings Need Joined-Up Thinking, Not Quick Fixes

There is no shortage of pressure on businesses to become greener. At ASH Integrated Services, we believe low-carbon building improvements need joined-up thinking and not quick fixes. 

Pressure can lead to rushed decisions. 

Energy costs, carbon targets, EPC ratings, landlord responsibilities, client expectations and public sector procurement requirements are all pushing organisations to look more seriously at the performance of their buildings. 

That is a good thing. 

But pressure without the right advice can lead to decisions that solve one problem and create another. 

Solar panels, heat pumps, battery storage, LED lighting, controls, insulation, ventilation and efficient heating and cooling systems can all play a role in reducing energy use and improving building performance. 

But none of these things should be looked at in isolation. 

A heat pump may not perform properly if the wider system is not suitable.  

Solar panels may raise questions about electrical capacity, roof condition, demand patterns and future use. A new air conditioning system may improve efficiency, but only if it is correctly specified, installed, maintained and controlled. 

The wrong green investment can still be the wrong investment. 

That does not mean businesses should avoid low-carbon upgrades.  

It means they need advice that looks at the whole building, not just one product. 

The direction of travel is clear. 

The government’s Warm Homes Plan includes support for upgrades such as heat pumps, solar panels, batteries and insulation, with a wider focus on reducing bills and improving energy efficiency.  

At the same time, the June 2026 update on non-domestic Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards confirmed the government’s intention to strengthen energy efficiency requirements for larger rented premises in England and Wales. 

Commercial buildings are also a major part of the wider net zero challenge. UKGBC has reported that commercial buildings represent 23% of UK built environment carbon emissions, meaning retrofit and better building performance cannot be ignored. 

For building owners, landlords, occupiers and facilities teams, this creates a practical challenge. 

What should you do first?

What will make the biggest difference? 

What is affordable? 

What will disrupt the building least? 

What supports compliance, efficiency and long-term value? 

You cannot answer those questions by looking at one system in isolation.

Mechanical and electrical systems sit at the heart of how a building performs. 

Heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, controls, electrical infrastructure, renewable technologies and maintenance all affect energy use, comfort, safety and reliability. 

That is why low-carbon planning needs proper M&E input from the start. 

A building may need electrical upgrades before it can support new technologies. Assess existing heating and cooling systems before deciding whether they need replacing. Ventilation, controls and maintenance history may affect which solutions are realistic. 

The cheapest option on paper may not be the best value over time. 

The most impressive-looking technology may not be right for that building. 

The best solution is usually the one that fits the building, the budget and the way the organisation actually uses the space.# 

Too often, businesses have to manage different contractors, different opinions and different responsibilities.

One company looks at electrical work. Another looks at heating. Another looks at air conditioning. Another talks about renewables. Another comes in when something breaks. 

That can create confusion, delays and gaps in accountability.

Green progress should be practical. 

It should begin with proper assessment, honest advice and a clear understanding of what the building needs now, what it may need next and what can realistically be achieved over time. 

For some organisations, that may mean immediate upgrades. 

For others, it may mean improving maintenance, replacing inefficient equipment, reviewing controls, planning electrical capacity, or creating a phased route towards future low-carbon investment. 

The important thing is to make joined up decisions.
