A Sixth Form College in North Yorkshire is reducing its carbon emissions and energy usage thanks to the work of a mechanical and electrical (M+E) contractor.

Scarborough Sixth Form College engaged ASH Integrated Services to replace its heating and hot water facilities alongside an upgraded building management system (BMS).

The Greater Manchester-based M+E contractor’s solution means the college can monitor its gas consumption and make changes in real time, and the installation of new zone control valves across the campus allows for the management of where and when heating is provided.

The BMS also automatically optimises its settings based on outdoor air temperature and the indoor temperature.

Ash carried out the bulk of the activity while the sixth form college was open, with the team on site working to ensure disruption to learning was kept to an absolute minimum.

The integration of the new facilities with existing infrastructure took place in the summer holidays to further limit the impact on staff and students.

Howard Jackson, co-founder and director at ASH, which delivers fully integrated mechanical and electrical solutions, said: “Organisations, particularly in the education sector, are constantly seeking ways to upgrade existing facilities to decrease their carbon emissions in the battle to reach net zero and reduce energy bills.

“This project at Scarborough Sixth Form College is a perfect example of what is possible.

“During our five months on site, our mechanical team replaced a number of boilers and installed new controls as part of the work to upgrade the building management system.

“Our solution optimises the settings based on the current environment as well as allow the college to be in complete control with a user-friendly front end.”

Scarborough Sixth Form College was the first college in the country to be awarded the Quality in Careers Standard Award. Established in 1973, it offers a wide range of courses, in the main to around 1,000 16 to 19-year-olds.

The college’s finance and resource director, Lesley Clemmet, said: “We are really pleased with our new boilers and the upgraded management system, which enable us to control our heating with ease, and more efficiently across the building.

“The experience of working with ASH was seamless, causing the students and staff very little disruption, especially considering the large scale of the project.

“The ASH contractors were accommodating and flexible, planning the work around the college’s timetable and other priorities.

“Howard, who was managing our project, was available on the phone whenever needed and attended the site regularly to check first-hand that everything was running according to plan.”

ASH Integrated Services offers a joined up electrical, plumbing, and heating approach, which reduces stress for clients by offering one point of contact and dedicated mechanical and electrical supervisors on each project.

The business’ three directors have 100 years’ hands-on industry experience between them, and still regularly work alongside other staff, including their apprentices, on installations and maintenance projects across the UK.

ASH is working on schemes across the UK in sectors including education, hospitality, commercial property, housing, and manufacturing.

ASH Integrated Services employs 30 people, including four apprentices, with plans in place for additional recruitment due to increased work in renewables.
